Vent Replacement
Vent replacement depends on the specific vent you're dealing with, but the general process involves these steps:
1. Identifying the Vent:
-
Location: Knowing the vent's location (bathroom exhaust vent, dryer vent, roof vent) helps determine the vent type and replacement procedure.
-
Material: Vent materials include metal (galvanized steel, aluminum), plastic (vinyl), or flex (foil). Material choice depends on the vent location and building codes.
2. Shutting Off Utilities:
-
Safety first: Turn off the power or gas supply to the vent you're replacing, depending on the vent type (e.g., dryer vent).
3. Disassembly:
-
Bathroom/Dryer Vent: Locate the vent cover (usually inside the room) and remove it with a screwdriver. Inside the wall/ceiling, detach the vent pipe from the flange using pliers or a wrench. Access the exterior vent hood and detach it from the exterior wall.
-
Roof Vent: Depending on roof type and vent design, you might need to remove shingles or flashing around the vent for safe access. Unscrew the vent from the roof deck.
4. Vent Removal:
-
Carefully pull out the old vent pipe from the interior wall/ceiling cavity. In the attic, detach the vent pipe from the main duct (if applicable).
